Since 2000, Dr. Kirschenmann has directed the Leopold Center at Iowa State, a research and education center developing sustainable agricultural practices that are both profitable and conserve natural resources. He previously managed the 3,500-acre certified organic Kirschenmann Family Farms in south central North Dakota and helped found Farm Verified Organic, Inc., a private certification agency, as well as the Northern Plains Sustainable Agriculture Society. He has served on USDA's National Organic Standards Board, the North Central Region's Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education administrative council, and the Henry A. Wallace Institute for Alternative Agriculture board of directors. Dr. Kirschenmann earned a Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Chicago.
