UNITED STATES CONGRESS
According to USDA statistics, tracked and reported by the Environmental Working Group :Over the past decade, U.S. taxpayers have spent over $112 billion on commodity subsidies, but just seven states took in half of the money. Why? Because four commodities—corn, wheat, rice and cotton—account for 78 percent of the subsidies, and a handful of states produce most of the subsidized crops."
Monsanto controls the lion's share of those markets so the subsidy policy effectively pays Monsanto at the expense of America's other farmers. The pressure on the independent farms is worsened by the fact that worldwide rejection of Monsanto's Round Up Ready crops have cost farmers hundreds of millions per year in lost exports.
Why is Congress paying a criminal corporation, with a history of chemical killing, to create novel foods containing pesticides and tolerant to deadly herbicides? Why are they granting Monsanto favored status by eliminating all market competition, giving them USAID contracts, and acknowledging the decade old WTO, as a legitimate body to dictate global food policy?
The same reason Congress stopped collecting Superfund fees from polluters and stripped whistle blower protections from regulatory enforcement employees. Congress serves corporate interest and taxpayers get lip service and the tab. It is criminal theft and a betrayal of their fiduciary responsibility. If you have had enough, leave the corn, soy, canola and rice on the store shelves. Our consumer dollars hold the power to create change. If you want Congress to change, call 202-224-3121 and remind your Members, they work for you.
